Fun With Excel Magic Tricks on TikTok

If you use TikTok, have you stumbled across any Microsoft Excel tip videos yet? It’s a fun way to pick up a few new Excel tips and tricks for your spreadsheet toolkit!

Miss Excel

The first Excel TikTok-er that I heard about was Miss Excel (Kat Norton). She has over 765K followers on TikTok, and her videos have 1.5M likes! It’s great to see so many people enjoying Excel tips and tricks!

In her popular TikTok videos, Miss Excel doesn’t just show you a handy, but boring, Excel trick. Instead, she uses music, humour, props and dancing, to entertain you, while showing you that shortcut or tip.

Excel Magic

For example, in this short video, Miss Excel shows you the “magic” of the Alt key shortcuts in Excel.

Excel Mistakes

Miss Excel can also show you what you should NOT do in Excel. In this video, she shows 4 common Excel mistakes:

  1. Forget Absolute References
  2. Columns too thin for data
  3. Paste Hidden cells
  4. More than 1 piece of data in cell

That list might look boring, but the TikTok video makes it fun!

Quick Excel Lessons

You can learn about Excel functions and features from Miss Excel’s quick lessons too.

In this video, she shows a quick example of combining text from two cell, and putting a space character between them.

Note: This uses the TEXTJOIN function, which is available in Excel 365, but not in older versions of Excel.

Video: Get Started with TEXTJOIN Function

If you’re not on TikTok, or if you’d like a more detailed explanation, see the TEXTJOIN function examples on my Contextures site.

In this screen show, the formula combines all the weekday names, with a “comma & space” separator, and it ignores any blank cells.

  • =TEXTJOIN(“, “,TRUE,A2:A8)

You can watch my short video below, that goes step-by-step, to help you get started with the Excel TEXTJOIN function.

More TEXTJOIN Examples

And after you’re comfortable with the TEXTJOIN basics, this video shows a more advanced example of combining text with a formula.

Instead of combining all the cells, the formula checks for specific criteria within the selected data range.

There are sample files for both videos on the Combine Text in Excel page, on my Contextures site.
