Have you experimented with ChatGPT, to get AI answers to your important questions? I’ve had mixed results, asking ChatGPT to write Excel formulas, and VBA macros. Some responses are good, and others are overly-confident nonsense!

Today, I gave ChatGPT a more entertaining task – write a Shakespearean sonnet about Microsoft Excel problems.

It’s been many decades since my last poetry class, so I chose the only type of poem that I could remember.  Well, except for a limerick, and I wasn’t going to risk that!

I did notice a couple of minor issues with the poem:

• Why is it rhyming “strife” with “awry”?
• From my limited recollection of sonnet structure, this isn’t quite right

Anyway, despite those minor problems, it’s a pretty good poem, especially for a first try. It does address many of the problems you might run into, while working in Excel, and it flows nicely.  Also, it’s certainly the quickest, easiest poem that I’ve ever “written”.

Next time, I’ll ask ChatGPT to suggest different types of poems, and try a different Excel topic and poem structure. What kind of Excel poem would you ask an AI tool to write for you?

With Excel, spreadsheets we create,
To organize and record our fate,
But oft we find, to our dismay,
Common problems arise each day.

The first, a lack of organization,
Makes data hard to find, a realization,
That leads to hours spent in search,
For information that’s hard to perch.

Another problem, formulas amiss,
Leads to errors that we can’t dismiss,
A simple typo can cause much strife,
And cause our calculations to go awry.

And last, but not least, is data overload,
With too much information to behold,
Leads to confusion, frustration, and dread,
And makes analysis a task to be shed.

These problems, though they may seem dire,
Can be solved with care and desire,
For Excel is a powerful tool,
That can make our lives so much more cool.

So let us not despair, my friends,
But work together till the bitter end,
To conquer these common Excel woes,
And make our spreadsheets truly flows.
