Excel YouTube Channel: MrExcel by Bill Jelen

Bill Jelen is the the king of all Excel media! In addition to his MrExcel website, and his book publishing empire, and his Excel podcasts, Bill has been on YouTube since July 23, 2006 – almost 15 years ago! Let’s take a look at it.

MrExcel YouTube Channel

Bill’s Excel videos have been viewed over 14 million times, and he hasn’t slowed down over the years. He’s still uploading a few videos every week, and always has something new to show us about Excel.

And, as you can see in the image below, Bill’s channel is popular, with 104K subscribers.

Latest Video on MrExcel Channel

When I last looked, this was the latest video on the MrExcel Channel, and it’s episode 2411 of the MrExcel podcast.

(Bill has probably uploaded 10 more videos since then!)

In this video, Bill shows how to use a bit of programming to find the indentation level in each cell, and write that number in a different cell. He needed this trick to identify the different heading levels copied from a table of contents in Microsoft Word.

Then, Bill shows how to set up grouping in Excel, so you can see as much, or as little, detail as you need.

First Video on MrExcel Channel

Things looked a little different back in 2006, in the first video that Bill uploaded to the MrExcel YouTube channel.

YouTube didn’t allow high def video uploads back then, so this video is in 240p. It’s a lot blurrier than Bill’s latest video, that’s in 1080p!

Bill still sounds the same though, and gives a great demo on the short menus in Excel 2003. Do you remember those?

Here’s a screen shot from my Contextures blog, showing the default short menu, with two chevrons at the bottom. In this 2008 article, I gave a couple of tips. To see the full menu, you could use one of these temporary fixes:

  • Click the Chevrons
  • OR, double-click the Menu name

In the video, Bill show how to change a setting, so you always see the full menus.

Most Popular Video on MrExcel Channel

It’s always interesting to see which video is most popular on someone’s YouTube channel. What topic do you think is most popular on the MrExcel channel?

Here are the topics for some of Bill’s playlists. Does that give you any ideas?

  • VBA & Macros
  • New in 2021
  • Excel General
  • Excel Functions
  • Pivot Tables
  • Array Formulas

No, the most popular video isn’t from any of those playlists. I was really surprised by this topic:

  • Create a Bell Curve in Excel – Podcast 1663

The video is only 4 minutes long, so Bill gets right to the point, and shows how to use two different functions to create 2 types of bell curves.

Visit the MrExcel Website

See more of Bill’s work on his MrExcel.com website. It’s full of Excel tutorials and resources, and there’s a great forum too, where you can post your Excel questions.

And remember, Bill is one of the speakers at next weekend’s free online event – Excel Weekend 7. Be sure to register for this awesome event, if you haven’t done that already.
